Lawrence Vargas is internationally recognized for his beautiful, intricate storyteller sculptures, black-on-black pottery, and playful paintings and prints depicting life in the Southwest. Proud of his multicultural ancestry, Lawrence’s inspirations stem from his rich and varied lineage. It is his roots in Mexico, Spain and South America that emerge as a unique blending of cultures in his art. This “mestizo” or mix of cultures intertwined with the faith and tradition of his New Mexican ancestry are reflected in Lawrence’s distinctive artistic style sought out by collectors the world over.

While Lawrence keeps busy with painting pottery, designing tiles, and running his growing art business, he only paints one original watercolor on canvas per year. Currently most of his focus is on his storytellers, for which he is famous.

After working as a transportation officer for the Department of Corrections and showing and selling his work at local arts and craft shows, he and his wife took the plunge and invested in showing his hand-painted pottery at a wholesale show in Dallas. After returning home from the show with orders from seven states, Lawrence quit his job and has been working as an artist full-time ever since.
