Chester Poleyestewa is mostly Hopi with some Navajo ancestry. He learned to carve kachinas from his Hopi grandfather and relates stories of his childhood going to Santa Fe with his grandfather to sell kachinas in the streets. He is a prominent artist in the movement to re-popularize traditional kachina carving.

A particularly attractive aspect to Chester's work is his paints. He adds temper to his paints which gives a slightly stippled effect to the paint, thus rendering the color softer. This doll stands perfectly on its feet, but Chester has added string around the neck in case you want to hang it on the wall. This is, of course, carved from cottonwood root.
