Jose Lujan is a native of Embudo, New Mexico, attended Presbyterian Mission Schools and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and Modern Foreign Languages at the College of Emporia, Emporia, Kansas in 1965. His Master of Arts Degree in School Administration is from New Mexico Highlands University at Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Working as a Middle and High School Teacher and Administrator in Northern New Mexico Schools, he retired in 1991 and began painting as a hobby. He took lessons in watercolor, acrylics and oils to acquire the basics of painting before going off on his own.
An avid gardener, he spends much of his time outdoors painting plein-air landscapes and florals in his yard and local scenes. His preferred method of painting is with palette knife but uses brushes for detail and effect.
